While many people want to have a home library to read and relax, this is not always an option. Finding free space throughout the room can be difficult, and sometimes the dream home library turns into a haphazard stack of books around the house.
Luckily, it’s easy to create a book corner. This smaller version of the home library provides a comfortable place to read. Book corners can take many forms to fit any size and style of home. Follow these steps to create the cozy nook of your dreams.
Before you set up a book corner, you need to find the perfect location. Sometimes this is obvious, such as when your room has been vacant for months, or a screen porch that is unoccupied. But if you’re tight on extra space in your home, you may need to get creative.
Do you have a spare wardrobe? Is there an open space next to the stairs? How about a built-in bench? If you don’t have an empty room, use the existing space to create your book corner. There is no size limit for the book corner, so there are a variety of ways to create a comfortable place in any space. Get creative and imagine what this space would look like if it were slightly embellished.
Once you’ve chosen the perfect location for your book corner, pick a rug that fits your space. If your book corner is part of another room, a rug can make your book corner feel like your own area. Try something textured and warm to enhance comfort, or use a cool-toned rug to create a clean, sophisticated feel. And don’t limit yourself to one rug – try stacking several rugs on top of each other to make it the perfect place to curl up and read your favorite book.
Having a comfortable seat is the most important part of your book corner (besides the books, of course). Seats come in a myriad of shapes, sizes, and styles to fit any space. If you have an entire room at your disposal, consider using a sofa bed, which can be used both as a seat in the book corner and as a bed for guests. If your book corner is in a closet or corner, add colorful floor mats and poufs or fun bean bag chairs. Or, if you’re transforming the built-in into a book nook, add comfy cushions and pillows to create a seat.
Accessories can transform your book corner from a place to a place to read a book into a cozy getaway. Bring a blanket, candles, side table, and lamp. Decorate with plants, pillows, and artwork with personal significance.
Now comes the most important part – your book collection! Use freestanding bookshelves, built-in lockers, or coffee tables to display your favorite books. If your space doesn’t allow for large furniture, stacked baskets and bins can also be used.
If you have too many books to fit in your book corner, make a portable book basket or trolley. To make a book basket, prepare the book you are currently reading and all the supplies you need for the best reading experience (pens, highlighters, journal). Place all supplies in a wicker basket or rope basket and bring them to the book corner every time you read.
Or repurpose your bar cart to make a book cart. Exchange champagne and glasses for your favorite books and a case with reading supplies. If your cart is large enough, add a lamp, decorations, and tray to decorate. When you’re done, push the cart to your book corner for a cozy night of reading.
